Wanted by society: My body, not my choice

The topic of this project is ''Wanted by society:my body, not my choice''.
I chose this topic is because from my friends' and my own experiences, I’ve observed that People are easily discriminated against only because of their body sizes, it’s reported that nearly 58% people have been experiencing fat shaming in their lifetime.
I make my visual hook as a prisoner photo. The message I try to convey is that being fat is like a crime, and our society doesn’t allow us to be like that. Although this is my body, I cannot decide which body size I want to live in my life. If someone tries to do so, they may encounter discrimination or tease in public spaces or even in their home.

And the second source of fat stigma comes from school, classmates and even teachers.
Students with obesity are significantly less likely to be accepted to university and receive less financial support than their healthy-weight peers.

The third source of fat stigma comes from healthcare settings.
Doctors generally have lower levels of respect for patients with higher BMI and generally spend less time providing consultations to patients with obesity compared to their healthy-weight counterparts.

In the workplace, people with obesity has less chance to be put into a sales or customer-facing position. And even their salary is lower.

Besides, media also plays a vital role in fat stigma. It makes fat stigma become exacerbated and entrenched.
People can share their discrimination throughout the media. The ideal body which is a thin body image spread all over the world. If you spend 30 minutes a day on social media, it can significantly change the way you view your body.

However, I hope everyone can understand that being fat is not an individual’s fault. It’s the association with humiliation and shame that makes people more unhealthy. When people experience fat stigma, it increases the risk of many physical and mental diseases.

Hope one day everyone with different body sizes can be themselves comfortably without worrying about being despised only because of their body sizes.
